Love Story Photography in Rotterdam: 25 years together

Today I have a special issue: my dear friends Karen and Marcel have been together for 25 years. They thought it was high time for a romantic photoshoot, and I couldn’t agree more.

The couple met each other in Rotterdam and lived here ever since. For them, the city is full of romantic memories. Some locations that have been important and symbolic for the couple were bound to appear in our pictures. We walked through different parts of Rotterdam, and it became one of the characters in our photo story.

timeless romantic portrait of a couple in the city

We started at the Maasboulevard enjoying the view on the river and the skyline behind it. Then it was time for a cup of coffee, and we went to Grand Café “Prachtig”. It had not only a speaking name (symbolic to use it in for a photo, isn’t it?) but also a panoramic view on the Maas. A Christmas tree was a nice feature too, I believe it was the only winter detail we’ve seen on this rather warm day.

One of the things I appreciate about wintertime photo sessions is that the Sun does not get too high. That means you don’t need to be up too early to get beautiful long shadows and dramatic silhouettes. One of my favourite photos from our reportage is the silhouette of Karen and Marcel against the Maas and the city skyline including Erasmus Bridge. It is nostalgic and timeless. If one did not know these impressive buildings were built over the past decades, one might think this picture is quite old.

Nostalgic Children’s reportage in Delft

Today I want to feature a children’s photo session in the center of Delft. The atmosphere was so magical it fits Christmas holidays perfectly.

Timeless children's portrait in the center of Delft

Alaina called me for a photo session of her three children. An expat family from the US spent a few great years in the Netherlands and were now moving on to a new destination. Living in Holland was an important part in their children’s life. The youngest girl, Ella, was even born here. The family needed a beautiful photo story as a lasting memory of their beautiful time in the Netherlands.

Sunset in Tivoli and magic olive garden

Today I want to share one of the personal moments I had this year. In September my husband and I went for holiday to Italy, and my mental batteries are still charged with sunshine and inspiration from that trip. I will have to make a couple of posts and I’m starting with Tivoli.

Children’s photo session in Rotterdam Schiebroek

Professional children’s photography is a wonderful gift for the grandparents. Roy and his sister had thought of such special present for their parents on a special date. We arranged a photo session with their little children in a park in Schiebroek, and today I am going to share some images from this fun reportage.

Naturally, we wanted to have a beautiful group picture of all four children together. The youngest, baby Thijs, was barely 5 months old. He could not stand yet, and the other children were too young to hold him. To make a nice group picture possible we had to let the kids sit together or, for example, lie on their belly. In the autumn the grass in the morning is mostly quite wet to sit on the ground. The answer was simple: to use a plaid and a layer to put under it. This worked very well: the children were dry and comfortable, and the photos turned out wonderful.

I wanted to incorporate that lovely moment of the children together into natural setting. Open field and trees far behind made a perfect timeless backdrop here. The photo is about the personalities of the children but also about childhood.

Maaike and Music: Poetic portraits

I have just shared images from a wonderful family photo session in Limburg. Now I wish to complete the story with a mini-series featuring charming Maaike playing ukulele.

playing music in a wonderful garden

If you have read my previous blog post, you know that Maaike’s family is fond of music and everybody plays several instruments. I wanted to capture the family playing music together and asked everybody to pick some music instruments (later I have counted at least 7 different ones used during the photoshoot). Maaike took a ukulele and was now playing in the garden while waiting for the others. I enjoyed the lovely music and of course made some photos. Let me share some of them.

Fruit garden, blowballs and music: A Family photo session in Limburg

Today I want to feature a wonderful photo session in Limburg. It is usually the parents who initiate a family photo session with the kids. This time it were the children, students, who wanted to give a special present to their parents for a special date. My old client Maaike and her brother Cas knew a photo session is a kind of gift to combine memorable photos and fun family time together. And it worked out awesome!

Family photo shoot in an urban setting: a walk in Rotterdam

Today I want to share with you some photographs from a family photo shoot in Rotterdam. This reportage is so full of sunshine and happy smiles, it’s like a sip of carefree summer joy.

It was my third photo session with Tugce and her beautiful family. Little Deniz has turned 5, she is a schoolgirl now. When I look at her portraits through these years, I am once again amazed how quickly children grow and how photography can help you mark different stages of that special time and build up a story: of a person and a family.

Faas and Co: the Blue Wall Portraits

Let me feature a little moment from the family photo session I shared yesterday.

The boys had a very active time at the beach, and before we moved on to the dunes we went to a beach café for a cup of tea. I like combining indoor and outdoor portraits within a single photoshoot for a diversity of styles. This was an opportunity. The light inside the café was nicely soft, and I found the vibrant blue color of the wooden wall quite inspiring. It certainly added a special mood. So I asked the boys to seat against that wall for a moment and made a few photos.

Family photo session at the beach in Kijkduin

Today I want to share some photos from a photo session with a wonderful family in The Hague.

Yvette contacted me for a photo reportage of her family and children. She was looking for natural portraits that show everyone’s characters and capture real moments. This is my favorite type of family pictures, and I was excited to hear there were four brothers from 6 to 14 years old.

If you live close to the sea it is usually a natural decision to choose the beach as a location for the photos. It’s definitely a good idea when you have active sporty boys to photograph! So we met at Kijkduin on a sunny morning and had a great photo time playing football at the beach and walking in the dunes.

Upcoming expositions: Rotterdam and Rome

Dear friends, in the next couple of weeks I take part in two nice group expositions and wanted to share the details.

OlgaRook_Portals

On Saturday 31 August, the Sehnsucht nomad gallery takes part in the Gallery Crawl programme in Rotterdam. It is an event with art, design, performances and artist talks at various gallery locations in the Old North. The exposition of the Sehnsucht nomads (including my work from the “Portals” series) is to be seen at Zwaanshals 470 from 1 PM. Take a look if you are in the city! it’s going to be festive atmosphere, and I hope you’d enjoy the art.

My next stop is going to be Rome. Loosenart contemporary visual arts platform is hosting a group exposition “The Game”. It will open on the 6thof September (the reception is free) and run till the 3rdof October. Save the date if you are there! Location: Millepiani, via N. Odero, 13, Rome.

In Rome I will exhibit a different kind of work: it is my first experience with mixed media, in this case photography and digital art. Of course, this exhibition is an awesome reason to visit Rome again! It’s one of my favorite places and a huge inspiration. Ah, la Grande Bellezza, here I come!

Rhoon Baby Photography: Little Simon

Today I want to share a lovely family photo session with Bettine, Koen and baby Simon.

We started our photo shoot at Bettine’s house in Rhoon. I often like combining outdoor adventure with indoor moments. Home is a trusted environment where everyone naturally feels relaxed, and it certainly works for young children. Besides, we can accommodate some details of the interior into the photos, and year later these details can help bring back the atmosphere of one’s growing up.

Barcelona vibes

The last month was packed with events and awesome photoshoots. I will share some of them soon. Today I wanted to share some impressions from my recent trip to Barcelona.

As you might remember, my Neon Space series with jellyfish had an Honorable mention in the Pollux Awards, so my work was also part of the group exhibition this month in Barcelona.

Travel, art and meeting people are all great sources of inspiration for me. And I’ve never been to Barcelona! So I was excited to go to the opening reception and the artist dinner and meet other photo artists from around the world. It was a lot of inspiration, and we had a good time.

Camera Time

I am into the themed posts lately and hope you like it. Today’s post is inspired by an old home video my mother re-discovered recently. It’s made by my granddad and makes me very nostalgic. At one point I had to laugh and say: that must have been the moment I was holding the camera for the first time! I will share that photo at the end of the post (and comment on the camera model too). But first let me share a couple of favorite photos on this topic from my client’s photo shoots.

Children’s portraiture and Music

Some time ago I had a special blog post featuring portraits with pets. Our relationship with animals says a lot about us. And so do things we enjoy doing, our interests and hobbies. They can add an extra dimension, a story to the photo. That is why I like to incorporate one’s favourite activities into a photo session.

Today’s post is about portraits with music instruments. I have quite a few “music portraits” of grownups, but today I wanted to show you a selection from family and children’s photoshoots.

Rotterdam portrait photo session: Marjan

When you put together a profile on a dating website, you want it to show who you are right away to connect with similar-minded people. Photographs – if you chose them right – can introduce you in seconds.

Marjan was looking for new portraits to use for her dating site profile. She is a beautiful 60-year old lady, stylish, intellectual, outgoing and full of energy. Marjan found it important that the photos should be natural and reflect her personality.
