Maria wanted to have her little children, Anastasia and Alexei, photographed. To capture them as they are now and to give a special present to their grandmother.
The portraits had to be natural and classic, revealing the genuine expressions of the children. A photo session at home was the solution. Children are in their trusted environment and this yields spontaneous expressions of all kinds.
The beautiful old house in Kralingen, where Anastasia and Alexei live, is part of their world and also has a character. All these details – the window, an antique painting on the wall, a fruit vase, or a bouquet of spring flowers – become part of a story behind the photographs. Such details will be more and more precious with each year and decade. When Anastasia and Alexei will grow up, these little things will bring back the atmosphere of their childhood.
It was fun to photograph Anastasia and Alexei while they were playing. Anastasia also enjoyed wearing different outfits, especially, a romantic princess dress. The photos show the personalities of the children and a range of their genuine expressions. I have also made some funny and touching photos of the brother and sister together.
